Why We Do What We Do

Greetings! My name is Carlton Rixon. I and my wife started this as a mission to help people. We are called to serve even the servants of God! Life in India sure is hard, and I learned that from an early age when I used to take my father as a kid at the age of 10 on my bicycle to the hospital for his breathing treatments. Eventually my father passed on at a very early age leaving me as the head of the household to see to my Mother, Sisters & Brothers, Aunties, and even both my Grandmothers. I was forced to quit school and take on every job imaginable just to keep rice on our plates. This all taught me how very hard it is for many others to survive as well. I at least at that time had a roof over my head while many did not, and I was thankful to God for even that. It was then I began to fulfill my lifelong desire to serve others who were worse off than I was.

Back in 1992 we started helping people on the streets of Calcutta after seeing so many people suffering. We also saw the likes of foreigners such as Mother Teresa and many others and NGO's doing their part, and we felt we could do our own part to help our very own people. After years of struggling in single-handedly helping many people on the streets prior, my family & I began an education program for street children right out in front of our own home in close proximity to a group of drug addicts in 1992. Family members & friends joined us in educating 250+ children and feeding them on a daily basis in our local neighborhood.

We were not welcomed by others out of envy and eventually in 1999 were forced to leave the area and moved to a remote village area where we now have an orphanage home, a school, a medical center, and place to expand to build a high school, college, and even a tech and vocational training center. We are growing our own foods as well as raising our own livestock. We also have another project in the North nestled in the Himalayan Mountains as well with a school there with several more remote locations for similar projects all across Asia.

We are now by the grace of God back out on the streets of Kolkata with mobile educational centers traveling to the various slum areas all across the city and wish in the future to set up night shelters for women and children. Current figures estimate over 49% (nearly half) the world's modern slavery and trafficking occurs in India alone. China is next at below 5%. One quarter or 25% of the world's daily starving also live here in India. Nearly 33% (the highest in the world) of babies who die before they reach age 5 occurs in India! Women are being forced to sell their children in order to survive! Many are forced to even sell their kidneys just to survive! We are trying our best to help as many as we can avoid these tragedies by offering education programs to train and assist these victims before they become yet another sad statistic in society by accepting them into our many programs.

Rape is at an all-time high all across our nation. It is said on average one rape occurs every 30 minutes in India! So many young girls are being forced into marriages while school fees have skyrocketed leaving many behind with no chance for a proper future. We wish to help to raise children in the next generation who are fine and outstanding citizens with the necessary skills and know how to avoid the pitfalls which lead to these sad numbers.
